The logo and wordmark for a fictitious bar in Tuscaloosa, The Steam Shovel is an idea I’ve concocted to make fake posters and merchandise for in order to practice various styles of designs.
I feel that I tend to do some of my nicest work when I use as few colors as possible. Decreasing the color palette #1 keeps things things focused and #2 can be neat if even the white space becomes a part of the composition.
I don’t like the lettering for this just yet. The old-timey feel is definitely there but I think using outlined lettering can be a tricky proposition. The “gear” in place of the o in shovel is a nice flare, though.
As far as the logo go, I am especially fond of the arm on the shovel. Using just black and grey shapes, I fashioned some of the white space into the icon so the viewer’s eye fills in the rest of the arm that is facing them.
